Health Tip: Managing Diabetes When You Have The Flu
(HealthDay News) -- The flu can develop quickly and cause aching muscles, high fever and chills. If you have diabetes, it's important to have a plan before you get sick.
The National Diabetes Foundation offers these suggestions:
You doctor may suggest that you check your blood glucose more frequently and monitor for ketones.
Your doctor also may advise to adjust your medication while you're sick.
Be aware that medications that you take for flu, such as cough syrup or a nasal decongestant, may contain added sugar.
Drink plenty of fluids.
Eat regular meals, so your body has the fuel to fight the infection.
